Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports The 3-year-old son of Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman was discharged from the hospital Sunday after being diagnosed with a severe case of Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Freddie and Chelsea Freeman made a joint Instagram post to share the news about their son, Maximus, including photos and video of the Freeman family visiting Maximus.
"After 8 long days in the Pediatric ICU we are officially HOME!" the post said. "Max still has a long road ahead of him to regain his strength and relearn how to walk. But we are so thankful to have our family back together. Thank you God for this miracle. Also, thank you to our incredible team of doctors and angel nurses for taking such good care of our boy. And to our village for helping so much with Charlie and Brandon."
Guillain-Barre is a rare neurological condition that causes the body's immune system to attack its own nerves, often causing numbness or paralysis, according to the Mayo Clinic. It is especially rare in children.
Freddie Freeman, an eight-time All-Star and the 2020 National League MVP, last played July 25. After traveling with the team to Houston for a series that began the following day, Freeman rushed home upon learning that Maximus had gone into full-body paralysis.
The timetable for Freeman's return to the field is uncertain. The Dodgers return from an eight-game road trip Monday to face the Philadelphia Phillies.
